Today, breakbulk specifically describes cargo that is too large, too heavy, or too irregularly shaped to containerize, even using flat-rack or open-top containers.
Common breakbulk cargo types include: power generation equipment, construction machinery, wind turbine components, naval vessels and yachts, steel structures and prefabricated modules, and large-scale industrial installations.
Container Alternatives for Oversized Cargo
Before moving to breakbulk, it's worth considering whether specialized container types can accommodate your cargo:
- Flat-rack containers: Open-sided and open-topped, suitable for cargo up to approximately 40 tonnes that exceeds standard container height or width but fits within the flat rack's deck dimensions.
- Open-top containers: Standard container dimensions with a removable roof - suitable for cargo that must be loaded by crane from above but fits within standard width and length.
- Out-of-gauge (OOG) on flat-racks: Cargo that extends beyond the flat-rack dimensions but can still travel on a container vessel with specialized stowage.
When cargo exceeds what these options can handle - either by dimension, weight, or structural complexity - breakbulk vessels become the only viable option.
Breakbulk Vessel Types
Purpose-built multipurpose (MPP) vessels and heavy-lift ships are designed for breakbulk cargo. They feature onboard cranes capable of lifting hundreds of tonnes, reinforced cargo holds for structural cargo, and port handling equipment designed to receive and deliver pieces of any configuration. Unlike container vessels, breakbulk ships call at a wider range of ports, including industrial and project ports with the crane infrastructure to handle heavy loads.
